Are you an Instagram scroller?
A Facebook group lurker?
A skimmer of sales pages or eater-up of email newsletters?
If so...
I get it.
So much about life today seems to encourage us to be passive scrollers and watchers.
With the result that we stare at other people's messages, rather than engaging with them.
We "like" things by tapping on them -- instead of saying so.

Now, don't get me wrong.
Taking a look at what's out there in the online world is HUGELY IMPORTANT as an entrepreneur.
But if you want to be an entrepreneur who truly leaves their mark on the world...
... you also have to THINK about what you see there.
Personally, I used to do this by signing up for what many people would consider to be an INSANE amount of mailing lists.
I was on the lists of tons of other copywriters, of major names in the online business and marketing world, of smaller names who I thought had valuable and original things to say, of present and past clients, of people I'd hired to help me over the years, of friends who are running online businesses, and of people who work in the service of causes I admire...
I did this for about a year at the start of my business, because I LOVED seeing how other people were launching, sending newsletters, interacting with their lists, creating content, and pitching their products, services and programs.
It helped me find out about marketing and business strategies that I do (and definitely don't!) want to use in my own business, and gave me heaps of ideas for approaches to email and launch copy.
The best thing about this admittedly very nosy approach?
It gave me PERSPECTIVE.
Rather than getting caught up in one guru's way of doing things, I chose to hear from a LOT of different people.
And the fact that I was hearing from EVERYONE made it easier for me not to trust ANYONE who tried to tell me that their way was the only/best/right way of doing things.
I was seeing too many others out there doing things differently and successfully to get caught up in the online marketing B.S. about how THIS proven strategy or THAT little known secret would be the thing that ultimately made the difference to my profit numbers.
And when I eventually decided that I'd "seen enough" and unsubscribed from just about everybody's mailing list so that I could focus on doing things MY way...
I've gotta say that I felt pretty damn good about it.
Remember this: the right way for YOU will never be the right way for EVERYONE.
Don't let yourself get accidentally swept away by other people's success stories or marketing agenda.
THINK as you scroll, click, and read.
And always, always check in with yourself to see if the advice that other people are dishing out would work well for YOU, given your priorities, ambitions, talents, and personality.
Because if you THINK -- and don't just absorb or accept -- as you consume other people's messaging, you'll be in a waaaay better position to take action when you ultimately feel ready to do so.
