Knowing how to write a compelling mini-bio is crucial when marketing your business.
And all the more so because online marketing's a tough game!
Algorithms can change with the drop of a hat.
Hashtags that worked great one minute can stop being effective the next.
Social media platforms and search engines can change how long your descriptions and posts are allowed to be without warning.
Plus, figuring out how to talk about yourself in an appealing way is a stress-inducing task for many business owners!
To make it all easier, I'm giving you these simple fill-in-the-blank templates, to help you write a winning short bio for yourself.
Once you've come up with the core sentences at the basis of your mini-bio, you can adapt them and use them for:
- A range of social media platforms
- Various pages of your business website
- Your email footers
- The beginning or end of your lead magnet
- Guest posts, interviews, and media features

TEMPLATES FOR HOW TO WRITE A MINI-BIO
First and foremost, remember that a great thing to highlight in your mini-bio is the experience of TRANSFORMATION you provide to your clients.
So have a go at completing the following sentences with language that's as concrete and specific as possible.
Top tip: If you're feeling stuck, go for clarity first, then add in extra pizzazz later!
TEMPLATE #1
I’m a [job title] who takes [target audience] from [pain point] to [benefit of your services]
----> E.g. I'm a web designer who takes creative entrepreneurs from experiencing total tech confusion to feeling confident and relaxed about their online presence.
----> E.g. I'm a coach who takes busy parents from a place of stress and overwhelm to finally having enough time to look after their kids AND themselves.
TEMPLATE #2
I help [target audience] get the [benefit of your services] they need to see the [bigger benefit] they want.
----> E.g. I help my clients get the beautiful, functional websites they need to attract the quality leads and customers they want.
----> E.g. I help time-crunched parents equip themselves with simple strategies and parenting techniques that give them more enjoyable, quality time with their kids and partners.
TEMPLATE #3
My clients walk away with [concrete benefit], [emotional benefit], and [big dream benefit].
----> E.g. My clients walk away with a robust, user-friendly website, branding that inspires them, and a site that works 24/7 to bring them the clicks, subscribers and sales they dream about.
----> E.g. My clients walk away with a toolkit of easy parenting strategies they can use in any situation, a feeling of "YES, I'm rocking this at last!" and a sense that they're finally on the road to having the family life they've always wanted.
NEXT STEPS
Once you’re done, SAVE the first draft of your sentences.
Then create further drafts where you play around to find the perfect combination of copy for your various online marketing platforms!
BONUS TIPS:
- Remember the importance of keywords when creating social media bios! You may also want to use emojis to add color and/or save space, depending on the social media platform.
- If you're writing a social media bio, consider whether or not you can add a call-to-action to encourage people to sign up for your mailing list. If that's possible, shorten your mini-bio as necessary so that you have room to include the call-to-action too.
