Confession time: The first time I first tried to write my own web copy, it was a disaster.
It was right back at the very beginning of my online business, and I just sat at my kitchen table with my laptop, and edited and edited and edited…
And because of that non-stop editing, it took me MONTHS to get the darn website published.
Unfortunately, I now know that this kind of experience is not unusual AT ALL for online entrepreneurs.

Writing any kind of copy can be a challenge…
And writing HIGH-CONVERTING website copy — which actually translates into more leads and clients — is even more challenging still.
Now, obviously there’s a LOT that goes into the process of how to write high-converting web copy.
But there’s one CRUCIAL starting point that I recommend to everyone.
Here it is…
—> Get super clear on your goals for your website copy
Truth time: before you write a word of copy, it’s KEY to consider what your business goals are for your website copy.
This is so important to think about, because at the end of the day, your web copy is ONLY there to serve your business.
That’s the bottom line.
It’s there to help you make more money and bring in more leads.
So get really clear-sighted about your goals for it.
Also: be selective!
Don’t give yourself too many goals, or it can get overwhelming.
Here are a couple of examples:
GOAL #1: Get people who aren’t ready to buy from me immediately to sign up for my mailing list, so I can continue to nurture them.
GOAL #2: Persuade people who are already pretty interested in working with me to book a sales call with me.
Simple, right?!
Now, you may have a lot of different goals for your site, but I really encourage you to focus on the ones that are likely to move the needle the most dramatically for your business profits.
So ask yourself, what are your top goals for your web copy?
And once you’re clear on that, let’s take things a step further.
Set yourself up to actually hit those goals!
If there’s one thing I know about online business owners, it’s that many of us are perfectionists.
For instance, you might have noticed your mind automatically drifting during the exercise above…
And caught yourself thinking things like:
“OK, cool, so I want my copy to get my audience to sign up for my mailing list! So, I’ll just create 5 different free online resources that people can download, have a newsletter sign up box, a blog, and a quiz to encourage them to do that! Oh, and I’ll encourage them to listen to my podcast too!!!”
If that sounds like you — whoa, Nelly!
Let’s take it back a few steps.
Instead of immediately thinking of the very best way that your web copy could help you hit your goal of getting more site visitors to join your mailing list…
Ask yourself this:
What could my website copy do that would be good enough to help me achieve this goal?
Maybe the good-enough answer is that your website copy could do a better job of promoting the ONE FREEBIE you already have.
That you upgrade your copy to create more persuasive calls-to-action, and place them in more locations across your site.
Now, of course you can also keep working toward that best possible version of your web copy.
(And in fact, you absolutely should!!! Because your website will — and should — grow alongside your business…)
But the faster you have a good enough version of your web copy written and ready to go, which is in total alignment with your current business goals…
The sooner you can get your upgraded site published and it can start bringing you more leads and sales!
